About Katihar

Katihar “the hub for industries” is the district head quarters for Katihar district. It is located in north eastern part of Bihar. The entire city covers an area of 25.5 sq.km and the city is divided in to 45 wards totally. Katihar city is well connected with roads & railways. For the entire district, Kathiar railway station is one of the major junctions which is criss crossed by seven major railway lines. Various different industries like jute mill, biscuit factory and various other small scale industries are located here. The products manufactures in various industries are sold in the local market in Katihar and nearby areas.

Katihar in Bihar is famous for its cloth market. Agriculture is major occupation for people in Katihar. Paddy, wheat & banana are grown in plenty here. It has upgrading itself by evolving as Municipal Corporation in 2011 election. Brief History of Katihar

Katihar used to be part of Bengal till the partition . After partition it became part of Bihar. It was bifurcated from Purnia district in 1973. It was ruled by Choudhary family who were the landlords in the region holding right over 126 small landlords of Kosi zone. The successors of family living in famous haweli Taj Dehori. Present Katihar has three major sub-divisions in it namely Katihar, Barosi & Manihari.

Geography & Climate of Katihar

Katihar city with a coverage area of 25.5kms lies above 24 meters from above sea level. The total area covered by the district is about 3,057 square kilometres (1,180 sq mi). It is located at 25.320 N 87.350E. Katihar is located in the plains of North Eastern Part of Bihar State. While it is surrounded by Malda district and Uttar Dinajpur district (Paschim Bengal) in the east, Purnea district (Bihar) forms its northern and western boundaries.Bhagalpur district (Bihar) and Sahebganj district (Jharkhand) lies in the south. Ganges, Koshi, Mahananda, Righa are the main rivers watering the vast regions of Katihar. Being part of Bihar, Katihar witnesses extreme climate.
